Have you heard of ‘smart homes’? Over the years when we’ve gone into homes for sale, we’ve seen some amazing smart home technology that homeowners love.

Your big question might be ‘Why would I install smart technology?’  Mostly, it’s about security and peace of mind.

What do we mean by a smart home?

Smart homes are more ‘fully automated homes’. Think of your TV remote control. Now imagine you could remotely control temperature, lighting and more ‒ even from outside your home, from wherever you are.

So-called smart devices can control the temperature, lighting and more. The devices connect to the internet so you can control temperature, lighting, power, security systems and more through your smartphone.

In basic terms, a smart home gives you the ability to control household appliances remotely or through voice command. If you’ve ever got to work or headed off on a journey and panicked because you couldn’t remember turning an appliance off or your security system on, you can understand how smart devices can help you and your family.

How do smart devices help?

    • Remote control of heating, cooling, lighting and other electrical devices. (This is one of our favourites.)
    • Access to security systems through a mobile phone. If an alarm goes off while you’re at work in the office, your phone notifies you so they can check in.
    • Video doorbells that allow you to see who is at the door through your smartphone. You might be away and expecting a delivery. The video doorbell allows you to confirm the delivery from wherever you are.
    • Convenient smart lock systems. It’s no secret lost keys can be a major headache as it often means changing locks. Smart lock systems can alleviate this issue.
    • Energy-saving movement-activated lighting. This type of device isn’t considered in the smart, remotely activated category but it’s a boon for anyone out late.

Is smart technology the way to go in the Inner West?

As we in the Inner West become more sophisticated, we’re embracing new technologies that can save us money and give us peace of mind. The types of smart technology you might consider depends on your circumstances and readiness.

  1. Security

Your home might have a security system installed already. The benefit of a smart system is that you have more control through your smartphone.

  1. Savings

Many homeowners appreciate savings they can achieve with smart home devices that turn off lights or appliances when not in use.

  1. Peace of mind and convenience

We’re all a bit on edge right now and that can mean forgetfulness. Smart devices that enable you to lock your door, switch off appliances or monitor security systems remotely can ease that anxiety.

How to make your home smarter

For the DIYers out there, it’s super easy to source numerous smart home products from Bunnings or go in store to chat with a Bunnings professional for installation and device information (when we’re allowed to, of course). If that all seems too daunting, you might want to check out these local businesses who specialise in smart homes and technology installations:
