Even for those who love Christmas, there’s always those people that are tricky to buy for, and it very nearly brings out the Grinch in us! So here’s how to make Christmas shopping easier this year – look for local, independent shops in Balmain that quite often stock quirky and speciality items that the larger retailers don’t.

And in the spirit of Christmas, we’ve done the hard yards to compile a list that we hope will help!

For the book lover:

Independent bookshops are always a goldmine of incredible books and literary gifts, and it just so happens that one of Sydney’s best is right here in Balmain – Hill of Content. And not only is the shop itself a wonderful environment to spend time in, but the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. So if you’re not sure what to buy, you can always ask for recommendations (although perhaps not on Christmas Eve.)

Nearby Roaring Stories is another gem for sourcing the perfect present for the book lover in your life. And you’ll probably even find a little something for yourself in there too!

For the gourmet food lover

If you’re looking for specialty items to tantalise the taste buds of a friend or family member, then you can’t go past the incredible selection of gourmet goodies at Balmain East Liquor & Deli. You can shop online or head in store to check out their range of wine and craft beer, and did someone say cheese?

Just along Darling Street is QE Food Store, another independent grocery store that stocks quality, premium items that you won’t find in your everyday supermarket. A gift voucher from here would give the gourmet food lover in your life the opportunity to pick all sorts of items they wouldn’t normally buy!

If you want to shop from the comfort of home, check out The Essential Ingredient or Herbie’s Spices. Both retailers have an extensive assortment of everything ‘foodie’, so you’re sure to find something unique and special.

For the homeware lover:

While you could shop online at Bits of Australia – they actually have a store right here in Balmain East, making it the perfect excuse to head out for some retail therapy. They have ready-made gift boxes, gift ideas for everyone on your list, and just a beautiful range of homewares, lifestyle accessories, stationery, art and jewellery. What makes Bits of Australia extra special is that everything they stock is made right here in Australia – and is hand-picked by the team.

If you’re looking for luxury, Pepper Whites is a must-visit. From bathroomware to kitchen and table, sleep and Christmas, Pepper Whites is also your go-to for candles and home fragrances. And we all know someone who can never have too many candles! And if you’re feeling a bit ‘stuck’, their friendly team will always be happy to help.

To find something very unique and different, check out Dee Molineaux on Curtis Road in Balmain. Describing itself as an emporium of earthly delights here you’ll find everything from country tables to silk curtains, decanters, handwoven indigo throws and Bengali hand-stitched silk fabric. If you need a gift that you wouldn’t find anywhere else, this is your go-to.

Indian Balmain is another treasure trove of textiles, fabric and specialty clothing. We’re also lucky to have Duck Egg Blue on our doorstep here in Balmain. They have lovely homewares, and will also find you a beautiful look for Christmas Day with gorgeous clothes from both Australian and international designers. And if you’re shopping for someone who loves cool Scandinavian design, including Marimekko and Normann Copenhagen, Stem at 295 Darling Street will definitely have something to suit.

For the plant lover

We all know someone obsessed with indoor plants, and thankfully Balmain has a couple of awesome independent plant retailers that will be able to help you check that person off your list.

Stop by That Plant Shop at the Rozelle end of Darling Street where they stock a wide range of indoor plants, pots, planters, premium growing soils and plant care products (there’s nearly 900 items in their online shop!). They also have unique giftware and will deliver across Sydney.

The Succulent Corner is another plant store in Balmain that is well worth a visit.

For the kids

We can’t forget the kids on this list, as some of them can be tricky to buy for as well! Especially if you want to treat them to something super special and different to what is normally found on the shelves of the larger retailers.

Little Treasure Chest Toy Store is just as the name suggests, a place where you will find all sorts of wonderful gifts for the little people in your life. From beautiful dress ups for imaginary play, to musical instruments, wooden toys and so much more.
