Now the warmer weather seems to have settled in, many of those living seaside or near the waters of Sydney Harbour are raring to partake in some harbour fun. Good thing there are plenty of opportunities from the Balmain Peninsula, with activities like kayaking, sailing and boating.

Not sure where to start? In this post, we’ll cover everything from hiring boats for the day to building your own vessel.

Motor cruiser hire

Whether you’re looking to cruise around in a sports or powerboat, have a party, barbecue and swim with friends, or even hold a night-time corporate event inside a luxury cruiser, you have several choices available at the Balmain wharf.

Make a day (or night) of it cruising, lazing around, swimming or partying in these well-kept vessels whilst enjoying the fabulous scenery.

Sailing

Are you a seasoned sailor looking to flex your sailing skills, or do you want to learn to sail? Either way, you’re welcome to join the Balmain Sailing Club and go for some Sydney Harbour sailing.

Registering for membership opens adults to several benefits, such as discounted race fees and Balmain Sailing Club merchandise, exclusive access to club facilities and much more.

Rowing

If you’re an inveterate rower who wants to be part of the bigger rowing community, then you’re more than welcome to join the Balmain Rowing Club. And even if you’re only interested in learning to row at this stage, you can register for rowing training.

Rowing is a great skill to have, as it’ll come in handy if the prospect of paddling around and exploring nearby islands appeals to you.

Kayak and stand-up paddleboard hire

If you’re reasonably skilled in kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, you may enjoy your water sport of choice with a kayak or SUP boat hire.

Enjoy Sydney Harbour kayaking individually or in pairs while taking in the beautiful views of the city from the water, or head out farther to Cockatoo Island or Neutral Bay.

Depending on the time of day, you can have lunch or snacks in the excellent cafés located in either place. Note, however, that only experienced, advanced paddlers would have the stamina to make the trip to these places via kayak.

For SUP enthusiasts and experts, you could head out and enjoy the calm waters of Rozelle Blackwattle Bay. You could then take a breather at Blackwattle Bay Café or the pub at Kauri Foreshore Hotel, or perhaps enjoy some freshly made fish and chips at the Sydney Fish Market while it’s still open.

Building your own craft

Do you want to have your own rowboat or sailboat? If so, the Balmain Boat Company based in Redfern is the place to go.

Choose from among their basic boat designs, or get a customised event boat for your business.

Repairing your boat

Do you own a boat that’s currently in need of repair?

For expertly done boat repairs, you can always get in touch with President Shipwright Services, which specialises in stainless steel welding, engine installation, electrical work and trimming.

Time to head out and enjoy Sydney Harbour

Depending on your craft of choice, you can head up the Parramatta River on a motor cruiser or even sail to Store Beach near Manly and listen for the fairy penguins (because they’re hard to spot but are noisy).

If all else fails, simply jump on a ferry or two and explore the harbour from the comfort of a public vehicle.
