There’s nothing better than spending summer outdoors whether it’s a music festival, dramatic fireworks displays to bring in the new year, or sitting down on a nice green lawn to watch a movie. So, take some time out from your usually busy life, put together a picnic basket, gather the family and enjoy some fabulous events happening over the summer.

Experience a posh picnic in Bicentennial Park

So Frenchy, So Chic is a posh picnic event where you enjoy everything French from flowing Champagne and scrumptious French fare to amazing music coming straight from France’s summer festival circuit.

There are even fun events for the kids including face painting, giant bubbles, drumming classes, and lawn games. And, did we mention the food? You’ll be tempted to overindulge with delectable treats such as crepes, galettes, Croque Monsieur, cheeses, and charcuterie hampers.

So, mark January 21st in your calendar and head down to Bicentennial Park for a truly indulgent experience.

Outdoor cinemas

For those who love a good movie, there are plenty of outdoor cinema offerings in 2023. To start with, the Westpac Openair Cinema has a full program running from 8 January right through to 21 February. That’s a full 40 nights of movie enjoyment.

The three-storey-high cinema screen will be set up over the water off Mrs Macquaries Point. Plus, there will be a DJ playing music before the movie’s commencement and lots of options for purchasing food and drinks.

The Sunset Cinema at the North Sydney Oval also has a full program from 12 January right through to 4 March with a different movie showing every night from Wednesdays through to Saturdays.

Plus, there will be food trucks and a licensed bar so you can enjoy plenty of snacks, popcorn, and drinks while enjoying the movie.

Then, of course, there’s the Moonlight Cinema that will be set up in Centennial Park. This has already started and will run through until the end of March 2023. For a special treat, you can try their Mr. Stubbs Platinum Experience, AAMI Gold Grass, or the Connoisseur Lounge for ice cream lovers.

Other events

As part of the Sydney festival, you can view an impressive interactive display of artwork celebrating the life of Frida Kahlo. It’s a unique biographical exhibition created by the Frida Kahlo Corporation and the Spanish digital arts company, Layers of Reality.

Located at The Cutaway at Barangaroo Reserve, the exhibition allows you to wander through 9 transformational spaces with 360-degree projections. At the same time, you can enjoy Mexican music and live performances.

At the Sydney Botanic Gardens, grab the kids, a rug and picnic food and enjoy outdoor performances of The Wind in the Willows.

To bring in the new year, don’t forget the Darling Harbour Fireworks. You can watch the incredible display from anywhere along the harbour’s edge including from a multitude of waterfront restaurants and bars.

Another event not to be missed is the Chinese New Year celebrations from Saturday the 21st of January to Sunday the 5th of February. Many different events are planned including the Lunar Gateways and an open karaoke party at the Dynasty Karaoke lounge area.

Celebrations take place at Darling Harbour and will include the traditional lion dance.
